Find information and a promo below.The manga by author Kazuyoshi Takeda, whose original title is Peleliu: Rakuen no Guernica, is set during the Battle of Peleliu, a months-long battle that took place during World War II between the U.S. and Japan on the island of Peleliu in Palau. The story takes place in the summer of 1944 in Peleliu, a paradise with coral reefs and beautiful forests. Tamaru is a soldier who wants to become a manga creator. The manga depicts Tamaru's daily life during a drawn-out battle between Japan's approximately 10,000 troops and the U.S.'s 50,000 troops, exploring themes such as what the soldiers fight for when so far from home on a small island.The film is produced by Shinei Animation and Fugaku studios, directed by Goro Kuji and written by Junji Nishimura with the author Takeda himself. The design and chief animator is Ryoji Nakamori, and the music is composed by Kenji Kawai. The film is being distributed theatrically by Toei.Launched in 2016, the manga concluded in 2021, receiving a nomination for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and an award at the Japan Cartoonist Awards.
