The first anime made with AI admitted to Annecy doesn't look great. We've been talking about it for months and Annecy has already announced that it will accept works created with the help of AI. Below we see the first title selected that uses it.The work we are talking about (and showing you the images) is Who Said Death is Beautiful?, a 68-minute feature film directed by Ryo Nakajima which will debut in the French Festival in the Midnight Specials section.A zombie film which, as described by its authors, was made using motion capture, VR and Artificial Intelligence. The AI software chosen was Stable Diffusion, but from the published making-of video it appears that it was used primarily for lighting after the main CG images had been created.The work is the first of dozens received for the selection at Annecy chosen by the organizers and, from the videos we propose below, it does not excel for quality and (probably) also for something else.Here trailer and making-of:Even if this work seems not to have been generated exclusively using AI but only for finalization and little else, and while there are already class-action lawsuits in the world because Stable Diffusion (one of many) seems to copy works intellectuals of other artists, the board of the famous French Festival dedicated to animation, in the person of its director Marcel Jean announces that Annecy has always been an inclusive festival with an eye towards the future and, therefore, also open to these new techniques/tools/ect.Here is his statement:"We have always declared that the Annecy Festival should provide 'a global overview of animation film.' This year, we have received dozens of submissions using artificial intelligence in one way or another. We felt it was important to select a few of these works so that discussion and debate about artificial intelligence focused on specific, tangible applications rather than being limited to the theoretical or hypothetical. Above all, we believe that the presence of creators using these tools is vital for the discussion is [sic] to exist.A festival such as Annecy is not, and never has been, based upon a dogmatic approach. 45 years ago, several festivalgoers and commentators were outraged with Zbigniew Rybczynski's film Tango won the Grand Prix, claiming that it wasn't animation! Today, this film is considered one of animation film's great masterpieces. Some 20 years later, controversy erupted over films using 3d software. Today, it's AI that's the new bugbear. It may well be that this technological breakthrough won't be anything like its predecessors. We need to ask questions, debates are crucial, but believe that in order to have intelligent debates we need to learn more about these works.
