Fast Forward: film sequels to the Smurfs, Toy Story, Spongebob and...

The big studios have already planned sequels to some of the most productive franchises. Below are the first features for which the first information and images have been published.
Ready from some Smurftastic news!?
The new Smurfs film, currently simply titled The Smurfs Movie, will arrive in theaters in February 2025, starring Rihanna, Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña and Kurt Russelland John Goodman.

It is directed by Chris Miller (Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots) and Matt Landon and written by Pam Brady (Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken), with the production of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation Studios and the animations of Reel FX Creative Studios.

Spongebob continues his adventures in theaters with The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, scheduled for December 2025. Directed by Derek Drymon, longtime screenwriter of the franchise, the film is also produced by the Paramount/Nickelodeon duo.

But there is still no news about the film Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie expected on Netflix this year.

DreamWorks Animation studios are also planning sequels. In Summer 2025 the new adventure of the gang of thieves The Bad Guys known in 2022 will arrive in theaters, again directed by Pierre Perifel together with JP Sans.

Disney also has sequels planned. In November 2025 it will be the turn of Zootopia 2, sequel to the 2016 feature film which has exceeded one billion dollars at the box office around the world.

Even Pixar continues to focus (or squeeze) on their most famous saga, in fact Toy Story 5 will arrive in 2026, always in the studios' favorite summer slot.

Finally, even further sequels to the films of the famous Sega video game character, Sonic the Hedgehog, are planned, after the first in 2020, the second in 2022 and the third expected in end of the year.

Netflix has also put into production the sequel to the feature film Leo, while Sony Pictures Animation has not yet released news on the long-awaited sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse which will close the story of Across the Spider-Verse (2023).
