Jeffrey Katzenberg opens a new tv startup: NewTV

Jeffrey Katzenberg, father of Shrek and DreamWorks Animation studios, after being gradually moved out by the new DWA property, opens a new interesting startup.
Katzenberg has secured about $800 million in financing for his video startup: NewTV. A Financing that will be used to create new and amazing high-quality video productions. Money raised from a variety of large media companies with two name over all: 21st Century Fox and Warner Bros.

The newco want to create new series that will cost about $5/$6 million for hour of production, with episodes no longer than 10/15 minutes.

"Jeffrey wants to take what Apple and Netflix and HBO are doing, and translate it into 10-minute-or-less shows," report Rich Greenfield. "I'm not saying it will work or won't work. The reality is — until we actually see it — it's hard to know."

After having been an important element from Disney, especially in its rebirth in the 80s, in 1994 Katzenberg gave life to DreamWorks with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. After covering the most important roles in the Animation division and after its progressive decline, it was slowly put aside by the new owners, NBCUniversal, to become at the end only a consultant.

So NewTV represents his new rebirth. A newco with a first important name: Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and former on the board of DreamWorks Animation (2005 to 2008) with a past also in Disney.

We're waiting to see what the Katzenberg genius will produce.
