Trailer for the France film Muyi - The Legend Of The Village Of Women

The first feature film from the French studio Studio La Cachette is Muyi – The Legend of the Village of Women, expected to be released in its home country early in 2027.

One of Paris’s most prolific studios, Studio La Cachette (Primal, Star Wars: Visions), is producing its first fully in-house developed and financed feature film, which also marks the directorial debut of its founder, Julien Chheng.

Muyi, 14, lives on a Chinese secluded mountain, forbidden to men. With her two friends, she encounters an opera troupe renowned for The Handsome General play. As she invites them to perform in her village, an angry Spirit awakens. To restore balance, Muyi embarks on a life-changing journey through old China, uncovering the secrets of love, courage and self-made destiny.

A stunning hand-drawn work based on the folklore of The Charming General - a Chinese warrior who, due to his unnatural beauty, was forced to cover his face on the battlefield. Chheng (alongside Sujuan Xu) draws inspiration from this tale to weave a narrative that spans time travel, addressing themes such as the role of women in Chinese society, the commodification of ancient civilizations, and the difficulty of connecting with one's cultural history in the modern era.

Muyi - The Legend of the Women's Village (orig. Muyi, la Légende du Village des Femmes) was produced with a budget of approximately 3 million euros; presented at the most recent Annecy festival, it is set for release in French theaters on February 3, 2027.
