Witch of the Holy Night - From video game to theaters worldwide
The anime film Witch on the Holy Night is coming to theaters worldwide, as announced by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment. The release date and promotional video follow below.
Witch on the Holy Night (originally Mahotsukai no Yoru) is one of the early collaborations between Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi - predating the founding of their Type-Moon project. It is a novel conceived in the mid-1990s but not published until 2012, featuring illustrations by Hirokazu Koyama.
The project was adapted into a video game released in Japan for PS4 and Switch in 2021, followed by a worldwide release the next year and a launch on Steam in 2023.
The original story is set in the late 1980s, and centers on protagonist Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a long family line of modern MAGES. Although she is disinterested in magic, she is suddenly declared as the heir of their family's magical art, and reluctantly begins her apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, a young witch who lives in a lonely manor atop a hill. Aoko balances her duties of learning the arcane, while also serving as her school's student council president. She also makes the acquaintance of Sojuro Shizuki, a new transfer student who is unfamiliar with much of the modern world, and contends with the plots of her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who feels that her birthright has been denied.
There is not much information regarding the production of the anime film, other than its production by Aniplex and the animation handled by the studio Ufotable.
