The anime Cocoon - One Summer of Girlhood in theaters in North America

The TV anime film that aired last year on small screens in Japan, Cocoon - One Summer of Girlhood, opens in theaters in North America this September. Watch the distributor's promo below.

Cocoon - One Summer of Girlhood (orig. Cocoon Aru Natsu no Shojo-tachi Yori) is the television film, running just over an hour, directed by Yukimitsu Ina (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Star Wars: Visions episode "Tatooine Rhapsody"), an animator making her directorial debut, from a screenplay she co-wrote with Taku Kishimoto. The crew also includes veterans of Japanese animation such as Akihiko Yamashita (Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron) and Shinji Otsuka (Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke) and composer Kensuke Ushio (A Silent Voice, Chainsaw Man).

Produced by NHK and NHK Enterprises, and featuring animation by Sasayuri, studios founded by former Studio Ghibli animator Hitomi Tateno, the film is based on the acclaimed manga "Cocoon" by Machiko Kyo, which tells the story of San and Mayu, two students at an all-girls' boarding school whose quiet island life is shattered by World War II. When fighting reaches their island, the girls are assigned to care for wounded soldiers at a military hospital hidden in a cave, forcing them to confront the horrors of war while trying to preserve their friendship and humanity.

Aired in Japan on the NHK network last year, Cocoon - One Summer of Girlhood will be released in theaters in North America and on home video from September 4.
