Canine Royale - AI and zero skills - don't call it animation
Surfing the net, among the new feature films seeking distribution at the next Cannes Marché du Film, I take a look at Canine Royale, an indie production whose production seems truly awful.
Canine Royale is produced by Furrywood Studios and its founder, Brian Hoff, the creator of the Palm Springs International Animation Festival (PSIAF) and a member of SAG-AFTRA, meaning someone with years of experience in the animated production industry.
And yet, the title he wrote and directed, conceived 20 years ago and, as he himself admits (on his Facebook page), presented to Disney and DreamWorks, which they likely rejected, he managed to realize independently using AI and some less-than-specific "modern animation technology."
With character designs by veteran Alfie Vann (The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron), the story aims to be a comedy with anthropomorphic characters, a parody of Ian Fleming's famous spy.
But what the trailer shows is something unmistakable: the complete absence of any filmmaking concept.
It seems to have used only AI tools, which is more than clear, but without any form of direction and with only one dialogue setup: a immobile three-quarter-length character speaking against a fixed background. The action scenes themselves are unnatural, both in terms of the characters' movements and the speed management. The final effect is beyond embarrassing.
This is more than just "modern animation technology"; it vilifies an entire category. This project shows us that the talent of the artists is far from being questioned.
Here's the trailer; judge for yourself:
