Born May 24, 1965 in Kyoto, Japan, is a Japanese director and writer, known primarily for his souls
Cowboy Bebop and
Samurai Champloo. He also wrote and directed two short films by
Animatrix,
A Boy's Story and
Detective Story, in 2003.
Watanabe is recognized for his ability to merge many genres together, as in
Cowboy Bebop (1998), where the classic western marries the American film noir of the fifties, the action films of the school in Hong Kong, jazz, and other influences, all in a science-fiction setting. In
Samurai Champloo (2004) instead, Watanabe mixes the culture of Okinawa, hip-hop, samurai and today's Japan. In 2008 he produced the music for the TV series
Michiko and Hatchin by Manglobe.
