Born April 14, 1954 in the prefecture of Miyagi, Japan, Katsuhiro Otomo began his career in 1973 as a comic book author and from that moment he became one of the most popular artists in the world scene as well as one of the most appreciated directors of the Japanese anime industry.

In 1983 he won the Japan Sci-Fi Grand Prix with Domu and in the same year he made his debut the Akira series. His first work in the field of animation is as a character designer in Harmageddon, directed by RinTaro in 1983. In 1988 he released his first directorial work, still today a myth, "Akira" which becomes a worldwide success and the power of attorney. various international awards.

His works after Akira include the comedy Roujin Z, Perfect Blue, Spriggan, Robot carnival, Neo-Tokyo and Memories. He participated as a screenwriter in another memorable film Metropolis (2001) by Osamu Tezuca, directed by RinTaro. In 2004 he finally released one of his most ambitious and high budget projects: "Steam Boy" of which he directed the film, after a 10-year travail and 22 million dollars of production, a feature film whose back still hovers the spectrum of Akira, but unlike the latter, the story is smoother and with a less enigmatic ending.
