Trolls World Tour is a hit even without theaters

Read...
The latest animated feature by DreamWorks Animation studios, Trolls World Tour, is the first animated film that missed out on theaters due to the global health emergency. And the first results are a success.
Universal communicated through its CEO Jeff Shell: "The results achieved by Trolls World Tour exceeded our expectations and showed that the premium VOD, to be understood as premium video on demand in homes, is a viable path. When theaters reopen we expect to release films in both formats."

So the premium VOD (video on demand), or the rental through online platforms which in the United States is set at $ 19.99 for a "rental" of 48 hour vision was a success.

The data only relates to the United States, where 5 million rentals have translated into $95 million in the first 20 days. On the one hand, the budget for the making of the film was $90 million, but compared to the visions in theaters, with box office divided in half with theaters owners, in addition to marketing and production costs, with the VOD service the percentage of the Production Company is 80% while the marketing costs are smaller and there are not hardware costs.

That's why the result is very encouraging.

The downside concerns the theaters owners. AMC, the largest cinema chain in the world (with theaters in America, Europe and the Middle East), said, through the voice of its CEO, that will no longer program Universal films in theaters belonging to its own circuit.

A mostly useless war, as the two systems can coexist. If in fact there is no doubt about the experience on the big screens of the theaters, on the other side there would be the possibility for users to be able to enjoy a film in their homes (for whatever reason they cannot or do not want to opt for a viewing in theaters), without having to wait for the release months later the premiere.
